چکیده

Assessing the Sensitivity of Spontaneous Baroreflex Control of the Heart: Deeper Insight Into Complex Physiology To the Editor: While several papers support the physiological and clinical relevance of indices quantifying the sensitivity of spontaneous baroreflex control of heart rate (BRS),1 Lipman et al2 claim that they are unable to properly explore baroreflex function because spontaneous BRS was found to be quantitatively different from BRS values provided by the vasoactive drug injection technique and is unrelated to common carotid artery distensibility. We believe that this conclusion is not supported by Lipman’s data, for the following reasons.

How to measure baroreflex sensitivity: from the cardiovascular laboratory to daily life.

Arterial baroreflex function in humans is commonly assessed through a number of laboratory tests based on quantification of the reflex responses in heart rate or blood pressure to external stimuli applied to the cardiovascular system. Evidence is available that these laboratory estimates of baroreflex sensitivity have both pathophysiological and clinical relevance. Indeed, a number of studies h...

Spontaneous baroreflex control of heart rate versus cardiac output: altered coupling in heart failure.

Dynamic cardiac baroreflex responses are frequently investigated by analyzing the spontaneous reciprocal changes in arterial pressure and heart rate (HR). However, whether the spontaneous baroreflex-induced changes in HR translate into changes in cardiac output (CO) is unknown. In addition, this linkage between changes in HR and changes in CO may be different in subjects with heart failure (HF)...

اثر استروژن و پروژسترون بر حساسیت بارورفلکس‌ها در شرایط حاد فشار خون در موش‌های صحرایی

Background: Epidemiological studies suggested that incidence of cardiovascular diseases in menopause women is more than their nonmenopausal period. The cardioprotective role of estrogen may be responsible for some of these effects. In the present study we evaluated the role of female sex hormones on baroreflex sensitivity in acute hypertension state of rat. Materials and Methods: This was an...

Baroreflex control of muscle sympathetic nerve activity: a nonpharmacological measure of baroreflex sensitivity.

The sensitivity of baroreflex control of sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) represents the responsiveness of SNA to changes in blood pressure. In a slightly different analysis, the baroreflex threshold measures the probability of whether a sympathetic burst will occur at a given diastolic blood pressure. We hypothesized that baroreflex threshold analysis could be used to estimate the sensitivity ...

Chronic baroreflex activation restores spontaneous baroreflex control and variability of heart rate in obesity-induced hypertension.

The sensitivity of baroreflex control of heart rate is depressed in subjects with obesity hypertension, which increases the risk for cardiac arrhythmias. The mechanisms are not fully known, and there are no therapies to improve this dysfunction. To determine the cardiovascular dynamic effects of progressive increases in body weight leading to obesity and hypertension in dogs fed a high-fat diet...
